TMJ Injections
Treatment Information
TMJ Injections
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) injections can be a local anesthetic or a corticosteroid injection. The type of injection can affect what to expect after the procedure:
- Botox - Side effects may include bruising, swelling, or facial muscle soreness at the injection site, but should subside within a few days. Pain relief and improved TMJ symptoms may be noticeable within a few weeks.
- Steroid - Steroid injections suppress the immune system to reduce inflammation and pain. Many patients report decreased pain within 24 to several days, and reduced discomfort for weeks or months. However, steroids shouldn't be used for long periods of time in most cases.
