Botox Injections

Botox injections for migraine headaches is an outpatient procedure used to prevent headaches in adults with chronic migraines who have 15 or more days each month with headache lasting 4 or more hours each day. Botox, also known as OnabotulinumtoxinA, has been certified for individuals suffering from chronic migraines since 2010. It is also an FDA-approved treatment.

This information page will explain what it is, Dr. Singer can determine if it is for you.

What is Botox? Botox is a muscle-weakening or paralyzing medication. It can effectively cure various medical issues and minimize skin wrinkles in tiny doses.

What are the common symptoms of chronic migraine?

  • Moderate to severe headaches or head pain
  • Head pain that causes throbbing, pounding, or pulsating sensations
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light, noise, and/or smells
  • Attacks that last from 4 hours to several days

What happens during an injection for migraine treatment? Using a very small needle, Dr. Singer injects botulinum toxin into the tiny muscles under your skin through various areas around your face, head, and neck. You might get injections in your forehead, temples, and the back of your head and neck.

What happens after an injection? It can take several weeks and multiple treatments before you start experiencing relief from your migraines. Some patients find they need infrequent injections, others need regular treatments to keep migraines under control.

How long can I expect pain relief? The extent and duration of pain relief may depend on individual response to the injections. In general, patients receiving Botox injections experience a decrease in the average number of days they suffered them and the length of time they suffered from symptoms. They also experienced lower days off from work and more pain-free days every month.

What should I look for after an injection? Botulinum toxin injectables should be avoided by pregnant women and nursing mothers. When given by an experienced provider, such as Dr. Singer, botulinum toxin injections are relatively safe. However, some people experience pain, bruising, or swelling where the drug was injected. Other possible side effects include headache or flu-like symptoms, dry or watering eyes, dropping on one eyelid, eyebrow, or side of the mouth, drooling. Very rarely more serious symptoms might occur, speak to your doctor about all the possible side effects.
